118 polluting industries shut in Bangalore

BANGALORE: As many as 118 highly polluting industries in Bangalore
city have been ordered to shut down by the Karnataka State Pollution
Control Board during 2012-13 for failing to comply with environment
standards.

This was disclosed by forests, environment and ecology minister
Ramanath Rai in his written reply in the legislative assembly on
Monday. Rai said another 60 highly polluting industries in Bangalore
had been ordered to shut down by the Board during 2011-12 for failing
to comply with environment standards and nine industries during
2010-11.

Admitting that air and water pollution are certainly affecting the
life of Bangalore residents, the minister said the board conducts
frequent checks to ascertain the extent and causes for the pollution
by industries in and around Bangalore.
